12 Concrete Songs. Vol. II

The starting point of the project 12 Concrete Songs is a monument erected in the Weimar cemetery to honour the workers who lost their lives during the protests triggered by the Kapp Putsch in 1920. It was built by Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus, later destroyed by the Nazis and reconstructed in 1946 after WWII.

Gonzalo Elvira deconstructs the funerary monument using its ‘fragments’ as the elements of his own universal language, in strong harmony with Bauhaus guidelines. In this interdisciplinary project, that embraces visual art, architecture and music, the artist seeks a connection between different disciplines, finding their mutual references and relationships.

Deconstructing the monument from a formal point of view, Elvira also creates new conceptual meanings that, together with the historical background of the project, encourage dialogue with the present.
